Martinhal Beach Resort in Portugal

For someone who likes endless activities and sun, a short health and fitness break away was just what I needed. I flew to the Algarve in Portugal to stay at the new five-star Martinhal Luxury Beach Resort. Opened in April 2010 and destined to become one of the finest luxury resorts on the Algarve, I was looking forward to staying there and experiencing what it had to offer.

On arrival, I was welcomed by the friendly staff with a refreshing drink, before being shown to my room which I was very impressed by; modern, spacious with a lovely bathroom, large bed, flat screen TV and Bose iPod speakers. I also found handmade pastries waiting for me that tasted divine! The view from my balcony was stunning; the resort overlooks and is situated on the beautiful Martinhal Beach; a long stretch of sun-kissed sand located in an unspoilt region near the small fishing port of Sagres, and surrounded by one of Portugal's national parks. The area enjoys comfortable temperatures all year round and can expect a yearly average of 300 sunny days with fresh Atlantic breezes taming the heat of high summer.

Activities and things to do at Martinhal are endless…from the spa to the tennis and football academy, from windsurfing to wine tasting, from bike rides to sunbathing, there's something for everyone. Guests are also presented with a full schedule of weekly leisure activities on arrival which include Pilates, stretch, aqua aerobics, tennis, football and basketball. While I was there I tried a hot stone massage, a Pilates class, a bike ride along the coast, windsurfing and tennis lesson, as well as having a good workout in their lovely gym and a swim in one of their many spacious heated pools - I was truly impressed with everything there is to do.

Martinhal Beach Resort offers a 38 room boutique hotel, all overlooking the ocean, including 45 private villas, 23 luxurious townhouses and 142 bay, garden, ocean, and pinewood houses. All interiors are comfortable and modern and ooze sumptuousness alongside pure barefoot luxury. The resort caters for solos, couples and families who aspire for an active and wellness holiday experience.

The array of food and wine at the resort is good; there are three restaurants offering a huge variety of cuisine options, including some of Portugal's finest wines. For those wanting a relaxed night in, the chefs will prepare your meals and deliver them to you - a unique chic style of room service! The main restaurant O Terraco serves beautiful local food and fabulous deserts; there is also a sea food restaurant and Italian pizzeria called Oz Gambozinos. For those staying in the one, two or three bedroom villas have the option of self-catering if they wish, with a supermarket close by with a small one on resort.

The Sagres region is all about the great outdoors, and guests of Martinhal Beach Resort can either take advantage of the resort's comprehensive sports and activities programme or plan their own itinerary. Alternatively hiking one of the many coastal footpaths can be equally rewarding. Health and Fitness Travel has different types of programmes: spa and holistic, golf, tennis or windsurfing. Martinhal offers something for everyone wanting an active and healthy holiday away.
