Spirituality in the Sun

Whether you're heading for a UK destination or somewhere more exotic, there are plenty of fantastic ways to keep fit that are so much more fun than the daily grind of a gym treadmill. If you've booked yourself flights to India, you'll be in the spiritual home of Yoga where there are no shortage of stunning retreats and classes where you can rejuvenate your mind and body. If you're already a master of Ashtanga then simply throw your towel onto the nearest sandy beach and salute the sun while catching some rays. Running on sand is notoriously challenging and is a great place for some sprint training.

Water sports are a brilliant way to keep fit too, whether you want to spend your days swimming in dazzling oceans or the hotel pool, to something more thrilling like water skiing, scuba diving and surfing. For those who want to take it a little easier, why not grab a friend and head out to sea in a pedalo, offering you not only stunning views but also a brilliant cardiovascular, cycling workout.

Urban Training

If you have a city break planned, have no fear. Even the lack of sea needn't stop you from getting some much needed exercise. For a wonderful way to see a new city, pack your running shoes and take to the streets. Imagine an inspiring soundtrack on your mp3 player as you run past some of the world's most stunning sights like the Trevi Fountain in Rome perhaps, or the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. There is no better way to see the sights of a city that will leave you feeling as revitalised and mesmerised. You'll be spending so much time gazing at your incredible surroundings that you won't even realise you're running!

Days in the Hills

If you're enjoying a holiday in the hills, be it the Swiss Alps, the Himalayas or the Scottish Highlands, take the opportunity to get on your mountain bike or lace up your walking boots. Skiing and snowboarding are great for conditioning if you're lucky enough to have snow. You'll have more than earned some hearty cuisine in a cosy pub after such exhilarating exercise.

Push Ups and Partying

Before you head out for dinner there's always time for a set of few push-ups and lunges in your hotel room if you're feeling particularly active. Then again, a night of dancing in a Krakow nightclub could be just as effective and far more fun!

European Cuisine

Many think that eating healthy on holiday can be a challenge, but this really doesn't have to be the case. Sunshine destinations like Greece, Italy and Spain are havens for fresh fruits and vegetables with light small meals that allow you to snack to your heart's content. The heat naturally often makes us eat less and drink more fluids too. If you have booked a trip to Prague or another Eastern European destination, you may find the food heavy and filling but there are usually always international restaurants and cafes to choose from to avoid the traditional meaty stews and dumplings...although they are most definitely worth a try.

Other Worldly Flavours

If you are lucky enough to be heading to the other side of the world with flights to Thailand, Indonesia or Australia you'll have an endless choice of healthy delicacies from freshly caught seafood to stir fry's, Thai broths and the freshest of local ingredients.

The best holiday eating tip is to eat local whenever you can and to avoid the fast food chains at all costs. Not only are they the unhealthier, more fattening and expensive choice, trying new cuisines and flavours is one of the best reasons to travel. So, open your mind and make your taste buds happy with exciting local flavours and exotic foods.

A drink is always nice with dinner but make sure that you complement any alcohol with plenty of water and try not to overdo it, especially if you are in hotter climbs when too much of the hard stuff can cause dehydration and headaches.

Some Handy Tips

Make sure you heed any travel advice about your chosen destination, whether it is drinking only bottled water to ensuring you have the required vaccinations. Stay well on flights by taking enough water with you and pack your own healthy travel snacks like seeds, fruit and nuts, alleviating the temptation to snack on the dreaded in-flight peanuts and chocolate bars. Moisturiser, a good book and a comfy pillow are all lifesavers on long haul flights when getting as much sleep as you can is a must.
