Tell us about the resort – what makes Mangosteen Ayurveda & Wellness Resort special?

Located on a hillside on the southern coast of Phuket, Mangosteen Ayurveda & Wellness Resort is a small unique property, independently run by a family that gives it a personal, homey touch, allowing you to fully relax.

Many facets of the hotel décor, toiletries and more have been inspired by the Mangosteen fruit or the “Queen of Fruits” and national fruit of Thailand. This fruit has many health benefits and you’ll certainly be able to sample it during your stay.

Mangosteen is an adult only hotel and is an eclectic mixture - as well as the wellness offerings, they have a swim-up pool bar, themed dinners (Italian and International nights), an underground restaurant and wine cellar (private bookings only). There are aquariums in the desks at reception and the small spa is distinctly focused on Ayurvedic treatments. However, it all seems to work which I put down to the management. A lovely couple owns and runs the hotel and the staff are like family.

How was the food?

Programme guests will enjoy vegan, lunch and dinner and a buffet breakfast.

Guests can also enjoy extra options available at reasonable rates. And each day there is happy hour if you’d like to enjoy a cocktail or two - after all, you are still on holidays.

TIP: Traveling as a couple or with a friend? Make sure you book dinner in the underground cellar for a one of a kind and very unexpected experience.

What was the Spa like?

Mangosteen Ayurveda & Wellness Resort advised that they are the only resort in Phuket with a permanent, onsite Ayurveda Doctor. He oversees the entire wellness programme and process to make your spa visits a success. The spa is small with just 3 treatment rooms, however, the treatments I sampled were excellent.

The wellness offerings focus on holistic, spiritual treatments to nourish your soul and soothe the body using natural ingredients and ancient techniques.

Tell us about the activities?

Daily yoga is available at the hotel and a range of activities can be arranged nearby including tennis, golf, Muay Thai and water sports such as stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, scuba diving and even kiteboarding.

The wellness programmes

Ranging from 3 to 7-day wellness programmes, Mangosteen focuses on harmonising the body and mind through a combination of traditional Ayurveda therapies, organic cuisine, and yoga sessions.

Who would you recommend Mangosteen Ayurveda & Wellness Resort to?

Mangosteen Ayurveda & Wellness Resort is perfect for guests who enjoy variety and great value, it is not a dedicated wellness retreat, instead, a family run hotel with a lot of personality. If you are after 5-star service or prefer anonymity then this is not the destination for you. It’s worth noting that there is a vacation club here as well and info sessions are held regularly but are not compulsory.

What did you take home?

A more thorough knowledge of Ayurvedic principles and a keen interest to learn more about them and a reminder not to take life so seriously. I was genuinely impressed with the ability of one location to offer so much and while there were some areas for improvement, as there always are. I really enjoyed my time here – even though it was quite different from many other wellness destinations I have visited in the past.

Insider tip?

Many of the programmes are a similar rate allowing you to switch between them after consulting with the knowledgeable resident Ayurvedic doctor.
